Matt Damon is Bobby?

24 02 2010

It seems that after getting no award recognition for his turn in Clint Eastwood’s Invictus this year, Matt Damon may be going on an Oscar hunt. News out of L.A. this morning pegs Damon as attached to a Bobby Kennedy biopic based on Evan Thomas’ biography of the figure, His Life.

We all know Damon can do the New England accent, he grew up in Boston and put that accent on display in films like Good Will Hunting and The Departed. We know he’s got the acting chops, too. I won’t be surprised if his performance here is his best dramatic role yet.

Director Gary Ross is attached to helm the film. Ross is the man behind movies like Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. Don’t be surprised if Tobey Maguire joins the cast, I guess. I enjoy both Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. Ross has proven he can manage a period piece with these flicks, so his ability to recreate the ’60’s shouldn’t be second-guessed.

Writer Steven Knight has been charged with adapting the biography into a screenplay. His recent products include the amazing Eastern Promises, starring Viggo Mortensen. I really liked Eastern Promises, and I hope Knight can repeat his performance with the This Life material.

Apparently the film will follow Bobby’s ascendancy from the shadow of his big brother, JFK, to a national leader, and then his eventual assassination. I’m a big RFK fan, politically, and I adore Emilio Estevez’s film about the day RFK was shot, Bobby. Hopefully this film can continue to share Bobby’s story with the world.
